Who We Are

Restoring and Empowering Communities (REC) started way back in 2004 as a charity that Nageeba Hassan formed in memory of
her mother – Hadija Charity Program (HCP)

She supported with school fees top-up for children to stay in school, reading the story
books with children (turning childhood challenges into opportunities for children), guided and counseled young people dropping
out of school to go back, supported youths to go for vocational skills training, and gave them resettlement kits to support
themselves and their families, made home visits to offer psycho-social support. Then with like-minded friends we registered REC as a community-based organization at Wakiso District NO: WCBO/242/10 in
2010 because people needed to know who we are for the reach out we were making. REC was now being engaged by schools and
communities outside our operation areas and we reached out in partnership with religious, community, school leaders and
friends to replicate our work. REC needed to upgrade which was successfully done in 2016 with the ministry of internal affairs
NGO BUREAU: REGISTRATION NO: 215463 (S. 5914/12457)

ACHIEVEMENT

REC and the youth responded to COVID 19

REC and the youth responded to COVID 19 in our community and reached 500 people with masks, 230 children
and youth with readers, 70 homes sensitized and 50 children and youths trained in ethics education, children’s
rights and responsibilities, dialogue on poverty, covid and its impact

We reached out to about 50000 children in schools

We reached out to about 50000 children in schools and book clubs and 9000 youths in and out of schools plus
universities

We have 14 youths counseled and returned to school

We have 14 youths counseled and returned to school and have finished university, 43 went into skills and started
their own business, 150 in sessions to transition from school to work.

Over 500000 books have been donated

Over 500000 books have been donated to children, youths, school libraries across the country, seminaries,
university, community libraries, 474 class reading corners stocked and individuals in different professionals

Intergenerational dialogues have moved leaders

Inter-generational dialogues have moved leaders to make or amend policies that protect children like marriage
age to align with the government age of 18 years.

Working with parents on parent-child communication

Working with parents on parent-child communication has improved the family life and reduced domestic violence
